Artificial Intelligence Startup Landscape: Top Countries and Investment Trends

Artificial Intelligence Startups: A Global Overview

In the recent wave of artificial intelligence (AI) growth, Marcus Lu from Visual Capitalist has used data from Quid, sourced from Stanford’s 2024 AI Index Report, to illustrate the top 15 countries with the highest AI startup activity in the past ten years.

The data in the graphic shows the number of AI startups that have received funding in each country from 2013 to 2023. The criterion for inclusion was that the startups must have received over $1.5 million in private investment.

Key Data and Highlights

The table below includes all the numbers featured in the graphic. The data reveals that the U.S., China, and the UK are the leading countries for AI innovation.

In terms of funding, the U.S. leads significantly with a total private AI investment of $335 billion from 2013 to 2023. In the same period, AI startups in China raised $104 billion, while those in the UK raised $22 billion.

A deeper analysis shows that the U.S. is further increasing this gap. In 2023, private investment in the U.S. grew by 22% from 2022 levels. In contrast, investment decreased in China by 44% and in the UK by 14.1% during the same period.

Where is the Investment Going?

Quid also provides a breakdown of total private AI investment by focus area, offering insight into which sectors are attracting the most funding.

The area attracting the most investment is AI infrastructure, research, and governance. This refers to startups that are creating AI applications, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The second largest area of focus is natural language processing (NLP), a type of AI that allows computers to understand and interpret human language. This technology has many applications for businesses, especially in financial services, where NLP can be used to power customer support chatbots and automated wealth advisors.

With $8 billion invested in NLP-focused startups in 2023, it is clear that investors recognize the transformative potential of this technology.
