The Most Hazardous Industries
Workplace safety is of utmost importance, but did you know that almost one in three workers have either experienced severe harm due to their work in the past two years or know someone who has? Visual Capitalist, in collaboration with Lloyd’s Register Foundation, has created a graphic to delve into workplace safety and identify the most dangerous industry.
Assessing Workplace Safety Issues
Workplace safety is a complex issue to assess as each industry has its own supervisory systems, and every country has its own laws that govern how each industry operates. To overcome this complexity, Lloyd’s Register Foundation decided to assess workplace safety by directly questioning the workers. They asked 147,000 individuals from 142 countries whether they or someone they knew had experienced harm in the past two years. The following are their findings, categorized by industry:
The Significance of Training
Industries that cause the most harm are typically manual industries, such as fishing, agriculture, and mining, where dangerous equipment is used daily. However, training could significantly improve an industry’s workplace safety. The World Risk Poll also assessed the number of individuals who received training in their respective industries. They discovered that three of the top four industries where respondents reported the most harm (agriculture, fishing, and construction) also ranked among the top four industries where the fewest instances of safety training were reported.
Creating a Safer Work Environment
Ensuring safety at work is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Understanding workplace safety and the harm people encounter in each industry is vital when formulating economic policy or researching an industry’s health.
Are you curious to learn more about the safety challenges ordinary people face worldwide? The World Risk Poll offers more than just information on workplace safety challenges. It delves into many risks, from perceptions of climate change to how long people can survive without employment.
Bottom Line
Workplace safety is a critical issue that affects a significant portion of the global workforce. The findings of this study reveal the importance of safety training in reducing workplace harm, particularly in manual industries. It also underscores the need for more comprehensive and effective safety measures across all industries. What are your thoughts on these findings?
