Robert Redfield, Former CDC Director, Commends "Make America Healthy Again"
Robert Redfield, the former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) during the Trump administration, has expressed his support for President Trump's initiative to "make America healthy again." This endorsement was made in an op-ed in Newsweek, where Redfield highlighted the pressing issue of chronic disease in the country.
Redfield wrote, "Chronic disease accounts for more than 75 percent of the country's $4 trillion annual health care expenditure. Regrettably, we are a nation in poor health. The cost of chronic disease is exorbitant, and this needs to change. It's time to make America healthy again."
With over four decades of experience in public health, Redfield is of the opinion that the former president made a wise decision in appointing Robert Kennedy Jr. to tackle the processed foods industrial complex. This industry is largely responsible for the current obesity crisis in the Heartland.
Redfield noted, "Obesity rates among American children have escalated dramatically since John F. Kennedy's presidency, from around 4 percent in the 1960s to almost 20 percent in 2024." He further added, "The causes of childhood obesity are multifaceted, but the modern American diet of highly processed foods is a significant factor."
According to Redfield, the obesity crisis can be largely attributed to "special interest and corporate influences on our federal agencies." He also agreed with Kennedy's assertion about the corporate capture of federal agencies.
Redfield stated, "Kennedy is correct. All three of the main health agencies are victims of agency capture. A significant portion of the FDA's budget comes from pharmaceutical companies. The NIH maintains close ties with biomedical and pharmaceutical companies, and its scientists are permitted to earn royalties on drugs licensed to these companies by the NIH. As a former director of the CDC, I am aware that the agency can be swayed by special interest groups."
Redfield emphasized that agency capture is a grave issue. He suggested that federal agencies responsible for regulating food and medicine could be compromised by the food industrial complex and big pharmaceutical companies.
Redfield also pointed out that the promotion of Ozempic, a 'wonder shot' to end the obesity crisis by big pharmaceutical companies and federal agencies, instead of encouraging exercise and consumption of safe, clean food, could have been a warning sign.
A tweet by MrReeKilla (@MrReeKilla) on September 25, 2024, echoed Redfield's sentiments. The tweet read, "RFK Jr. was right all along, and now we’ve got a former CDC Director admitting it—agency capture is real, folks. The FDA, NIH, and even the Department of Agriculture are all in the pockets of Big Pharma and Big Corporations. We’ve been screaming about this for years! How can we…"
Supporters of "Make America Healthy Again" (MAHA) and "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) have united in their cause.
A video released by RFK Jr.'s running mate Nicole Shanahan was also highlighted. The video aimed to debunk media's misrepresentation of Trump supporters, often referred to as "The MAGA People."
