GOP Representative Fears 'Dangerous Precedent' - Biden's Overreach on National Guard Jurisdiction

Monday saw the Governor of Texas, Republican Greg Abbott, voicing his concerns about the reported overreach of the Biden administration in relation to control over state National Guard units.

Characterizing it as a blatant power grab, Governor Abbott claims that President Biden and his administration are seeking to grant Secretaries wide-ranging powers to dismantle National Guard units arbitrarily. He firmly believes that the Governors of the states should not be dismissed as the commander-in-chief of their respective National Guards.

In a more detailed explanation offered via a press statement, Abbott's office presents its views on Biden’s U.S. Department of the Air Force's Legislative Proposal 480. They believe that this proposal poses a potential risk to the Texas National Guard.

As per the proposal, the U.S. Air Force would have unrestricted authority to reassign Air National Guard units to the Space Force, thereby rendering the Governors redundant in their role as commanders-in-chief of their National Guards.

Abbott also penned a personal letter to President Joe Biden where he underscored the vital role the members of the Texas National Guard have played over the years. They have actively responded to multiple disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, and several others, including the crisis at the Texas-Mexico border. Abbott highlights his belief that the U.S. Department of the Air Force's Legislative Proposal 480 poses a serious threat to the Texas National Guard. He strongly advocates for maintaining the requirement for the consent of a Governor before any units can be relocated from the National Guard they manage.

In his letter, Abbott cautions that deviating from this sensible agreement and allowing Secretaries to disband National Guard units at will sets a dangerous precedent. As opposed to attempting this power grab, Abbott believes that the U.S. Department of the Air Force should collaborate with the affected governors to develop the Space Force in a manner that aligns with federal law.

Governor Abbott goes on to blame Biden's administration for its authoritarian nature. He claims their attempts to override state rights only serve to deepen the division between the federal government and Republican-led territories.
