Huntington Beach: A Pioneer in California?
Huntington Beach's Stance on Issues
Huntington Beach, often referred to as Surf City, in California has consistently been ahead of the curve when it comes to issues of common sense. The city's officials have been advocating for voter ID requirements in political elections and have been pushing for more local control over residential housing construction for the next decade. They have also been vocal about their opposition to the idea of California being a sanctuary state.
Protection of Parental Rights
The Huntington Beach City Council, along with a few other city councils and school boards in California, including the Chino Valley Unified School District, has been fighting for the protection of parental rights in relation to their children's wellbeing in schools. The council has taken legal action against several state officials over Assembly Bill 1955, also known as the "Safety Act". This bill mandates that public schools conceal any changes in a student's gender identity or sexual orientation from their parents, unless the student gives permission to disclose this information.
Support for the Lawsuit
This month, the Huntington Beach City Council filed a lawsuit with the support of the America First Legal Foundation in its efforts to protect parental rights. A number of parents have also joined the recent lawsuit against the state. According to the Education Code, parents have the "absolute right" to access student records.
Mayor's Views on the Bill
Huntington Beach Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark has described the bill as an "egregious piece of legislation that seeks to compel educators to keep secret from parents sensitive, private, and often life-saving information related to their child’s gender issues and/or expression." She questions why any school official would want to withhold such crucial information from parents unless there was something to hide.
Transgender Issue and Public Education
The issue of transgenderism is primarily a social contagion, and it is being promoted by social media influencers and some medical personnel who have not fully considered the moderate to long-term effects of gender transitions. Some countries in Europe and elsewhere have put a halt to cross-sex hormones and radical sex change surgeries for children, recognizing the devastating effects and suffering of transition recipients who were not fully informed about the mental and physical consequences of such life-altering decisions.
Role of Public Education
Public education's role is to provide a rigorous curriculum that builds character and prepares students for higher education and life in general. It should not be using minors as test subjects in an experiment that defies moral and natural laws. Most children experience challenges during puberty, and they learn to deal with growing up through counseling, guidance, and spiritual advice from parents and others who genuinely care about their overall wellbeing.
Sacramento's Involvement
In recent years, Sacramento has become involved in the culture wars that affect businesses and taxpayer-funded government agencies such as public schools. Sacramento should focus on providing essential services, such as educational improvements, fire prevention and suppression resources, infrastructure repair, law enforcement, water storage facilities, etc. Personal and sensitive issues should be left out of the classroom, as students already have enough daily challenges to cope with.
Improving Public Schools
Instead of introducing divisive issues into schools and keeping parents in the dark, school officials should concentrate on improving test scores in public schools. They should approve more charter schools, prohibit students from using phones during the school day, and teach both academic and occupational courses to secondary students. The city of Huntington Beach and other governing bodies that fight against the unlawful intrusions of Sacramento politicians deserve commendation.
Bottom Line
Huntington Beach appears to be a pioneer in California, advocating for common sense issues and fighting for parental rights. It raises the question: should more cities follow suit?
