Indonesia Tops Global Philanthropy Rankings: World Giving Index 2024 Highlights Generosity Factors

Indonesia Tops the List as the Most Philanthropic Country Globally

According to the World Giving Index 2024 by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), Indonesia has emerged as the most charitable country in the world. The report, based on surveys conducted by Gallup, analyzed the proportion of people in over 140 countries who reported helping a stranger, donating money, or volunteering their time.

Financial Donations by Country

As illustrated in a chart by Anna Fleck from Statista, focusing specifically on financial donations, it is revealed that 90% of respondents in Indonesia had made a monetary contribution in the month preceding the survey. Myanmar, Malta, Iceland, and Singapore complete the top five as the most generous countries globally.

Factors Influencing Charitable Giving

While religious giving is a significant factor contributing to the high scores of several countries, the CAF report also emphasizes that major events and disasters often trigger a surge in donations.

Case Study: Morocco

For instance, in Morocco, donation levels dramatically increased following an earthquake in September 2023 that claimed the lives of more than 2,900 people. The proportion of the population making such contributions rose from 2% in 2022 to 18% in 2023. Simultaneously, the number of Moroccans volunteering their time also saw a significant increase, doubling from 8% in 2022 to 18% in 2023.

The World Giving Index 2024 provides a fascinating insight into global giving patterns, highlighting the generosity of countries like Indonesia and the impact of significant events on charitable giving.
