Kentucky County Clerk Confirms Voting Machine Error Switched Trump Votes to Kamala Harris
Earlier, a video was circulated online showing voters in Kentucky experiencing difficulties with an electronic voting machine. The machine was allegedly selecting "Kamala Harris" when the voter had chosen "Donald Trump".
There have been several similar videos circulating over the past few weeks, which have been met with a degree of skepticism. However, this incident was different as the local County Clerk issued a statement on Facebook confirming that the issue "did occur".
Statement from the County Clerk
According to Tony Brown, the Laurel County Clerk, the machine was taken out of service while awaiting a representative from the Attorney General's Office. The Attorney General's office visited the vote center to inspect the device that had been featured across social media.
Brown stated that after several minutes of trying to recreate the scenario, it did occur. This was accomplished by hitting some area in between the boxes. However, after that, they tried for several minutes to do it again and could not.
Explanation of the Ballot Marking Device
Brown went on to explain that the device in question is a ballot marking device. Voters insert their blank ballot into it to vote for their specific precinct. It shows who the voter has chosen for each race and notifies the voter if they didn't make a selection in a race before it allows them to continue to the next page.
The device confirms with each voter that they are satisfied with their selections twice before printing the ballot. Voters can review their choices again before placing it into the scanner. If a mistake was made, voters are allowed to spoil that ballot and receive another one, with Kentucky Law allowing for two spoiled ballots only.
Investigation of the Device
The ballot marking devices are set for a voter to touch inside the whole box with the name of the candidates. In the video posted, it can be seen that the names were being scrolled through without any issues. This machine was the same one used by the voter in the video. It remained at its location in the vote center and was set face down until the representative from the Attorney General's Office arrived to investigate.
The voter who posted the video did cast her ballot which she said was correct. There were no claims of any issues with the device prior, and none since it went back into service.
Bottom Line
The occurrence of such glitches during voting raises questions about the reliability of electronic voting machines. It's interesting to note that these 'glitches' never seem to favor Trump.
