North Korean Troops in Ukraine Could Face Attack, Warns White House
The White House and the Pentagon have issued a stern warning to Russia and North Korea, in response to several international reports suggesting that North Korea has deployed troops to support Russian forces in Ukraine.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, during his return from his fourth visit to Kiev where he announced a new $400 million arms package, stated, "If they are co-belligerents, if their intention is to participate in this war on Russia’s behalf, that is a very, very serious issue."
Claims by South Korean Intelligence
South Korean intelligence last week supported claims made by President Zelensky, stating that at least 10,000 North Korean troops are assembling in Russia for deployment in Ukraine. Seoul also reported that 1,500 DPRK soldiers are already stationed in eastern Ukraine.
John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, described on Wednesday that the US estimates at least 3,000 North Korean soldiers have arrived at Russia's Pacific port of Vladivostok. These soldiers reportedly arrived by boat earlier this month.
Kirby further stated, "These soldiers then travelled onward to multiple Russian military training sites in eastern Russia, where they are currently undergoing training."
"We do not yet know whether these soldiers will enter into combat alongside the Russian military, but this is certainly a highly concerning probability," he continued. He then added a warning: if they deploy to fight against Ukraine, "they’re fair game".
Reports from Yonhap News Agency
Yonhap News Agency had previously reported that North Korea's primary intelligence agency, NIS, believes that Pyongyang has decided to deploy four brigades to Ukraine, which equates to an estimated 12,000 troops.
President Zelensky reiterated this figure in a Tuesday evening address, stating: "We have information that two units of military personnel from North Korea are being trained – potentially even two brigades of 6,000 people each."
Zelensky further remarked that this is an indication of the war's escalating internationalization in favor of Moscow. He has called on his Western supporters to respond.
Accusations Against Pyongyang
Pyongyang has long been accused of supplying weapons, particularly artillery shells, to Russian forces for use in Ukraine. Kiev has spoken of an 'axis' at war with Ukraine, which includes Russia, Iran, and now North Korea.
