Ohio Mother Sentenced to Nine Years for Child's Death Due to Mountain Dew and Baby Formula

Ohio Mother Receives Nine-Year Sentence for Death of Child Fed on Mountain Dew and Baby Formula

In a tragic case from Ohio, a mother has been handed a nine-year prison sentence for the death of her four-year-old child, who was given a diet of Mountain Dew and baby formula. Tamara Banks, aged 41, admitted to manslaughter in March, following the death of her daughter, Karmity Hoeb, from a diabetes-related brain injury. The child's father also admitted guilt and is set to receive his sentence next month.

"One of the Most Tragic Cases"

Clermont County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Clay Tharp expressed his sorrow over the case, stating, “This child did not have to die. This is one of the most tragic cases I have ever encountered.” The prosecution detailed how Banks would regularly feed her daughter bottles of baby formula mixed with soda. Banks, who attended court in a wheelchair, insisted to the court that she believed she was taking proper care of her daughter.

Death Due to Diabetic Ketoacidosis

The cause of Karmity's death was diabetic ketoacidosis. Despite showing signs of a serious medical condition for several days, Banks did not call 911 until her daughter had turned blue and stopped breathing. The young girl was found to be brain dead. The prosecution argued that Karmity was a victim of abuse and neglect. At the time of her death, all of her teeth had completely decayed. She had never been taken to a dentist. The prosecution also contended that Banks should have known better, as she had a son who fell into a diabetic coma at the same age as Karmity.

Parental Responsibility

Common Pleas Judge Victor Haddad, during the sentencing on Friday, commented, “It’s hard to be a good parent, but you expect at least mediocre parents. Not knowing what to do is not an excuse.”

Thought-Provoking Conclusion

This heartbreaking case brings to light the devastating consequences of neglect and ignorance. It serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with parenthood.
