Tracking the Travels of the US Secretary of State Since 2021
The Dominance of the U.S. on the Global Stage
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, the United States has emerged as the world's largest economy, a military powerhouse, and a significant cultural influence. The foreign policy of the U.S. plays a crucial role in shaping the geopolitical landscape. By examining the data, we can determine where the U.S. focuses its influence.
Mapping the Travels of Secretary Blinken
This map, provided by Visual Capitalist's Pallavi Rao, illustrates the countries that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has visited most frequently since his term began in January 2021. The data, sourced from the State Department, was last updated on September 27th, 2024.
Frequent Destinations of Secretary Blinken
During his term, Secretary Blinken has visited Israel 18 times, making it the country he has visited the most. Ten of these visits occurred after October 2023, following attacks by Hamas that resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,000 Israeli civilians. Since then, the region has become a major conflict zone, with Israel repeatedly bombing the Gaza strip, leading to over 43,000 Palestinian deaths, more than a quarter of whom were children.
In response, retaliatory rocket launches from Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis have prompted Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon and Yemen. Meanwhile, Secretary Blinken has visited Qatar and Egypt nine times each, both of which are mediators in the war. He has also visited Saudi Arabia as part of a long-term plan to normalize relations between the House of Saud and Israel.
Secretary Blinken has visited the West Bank four times, most recently to reaffirm U.S. support for a Palestinian state. These visits to the Middle East contrast with his five trips to Ukraine, which were also intended to demonstrate American support as the country faces a Russian invasion.
