UNRWA Jerusalem Office Closes After Arson Attacks: What's Next?

UNRWA Shuts Down Jerusalem Offices Following Arson Attacks by Israeli Settlers

Announcement by The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) declared on Thursday that it is closing its main office in East Jerusalem. This decision comes after Israeli settlers conducted an arson attack on the agency's building.

Repeat Attacks on UNRWA Building

According to Phillipe Lazzarini, the agency's general commissioner, this was the second attack on the UNRWA building by settlers within a week. "Our director, alongside other staff members, had to extinguish the fire themselves as it took a considerable amount of time for the Israeli fire services and police to arrive. This is an unacceptable situation. The lives of UN staff were once again put in serious danger," he said.

Decision to Close the Compound

"Considering this second horrific incident in less than a week, I have decided to close our compound until adequate security measures are in place," Lazzarini stated. Social media videos showed the UNRWA building engulfed in flames, with settlers heard cheering in the background. Although no one was injured, the fires caused considerable property damage, as reported by the WAFA news agency.

Previous Attacks on Headquarters

Just two days prior, the same headquarters was attacked by settlers who threw stones at UN staff members "under the watch of the Israeli police," added Lazzarini.

Call for Accountability

Lazzarini urged that the attackers be investigated and held accountable. "Anything less will establish a dangerous precedent," he warned, noting that settlers have been consistently attacking and intimidating UNRWA staff for several months. He also mentioned instances where Israeli extremists threatened their staff with firearms.

Protests Outside UNRWA Headquarters

For the past two months, settlers have been holding violent and provocative protests outside the UNRWA headquarters. The UN agency has been working in support of Palestinian refugees and internally displaced Palestinians since 1950, providing education, health care, and other services. However, in recent years, it has been grappling with a severe funding shortage for its global operations.

Accusations Against UNRWA Staff

Following the attacks on October 7, Israel accused UNRWA staff members of participating in the attack.
