Work From Home Trends in Europe

Working from Home Statistics in the European Union

In 2023, data from Eurostat revealed that 22 percent of employed individuals between the ages of 15 and 64 in the European Union worked from home. This figure is divided between nine percent who usually worked from home and 13 percent who worked from home only occasionally.

Increased Work from Home Rates Since 2019

The percentage of employees working from home has seen an eight percentage point increase since 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and the widespread adoption of teleworking.

Work from Home Rates by Country

As shown in a chart by Anna Fleck of Statista, The Netherlands had the highest percentage of people who worked from home at least occasionally in 2023, at 51.9 percent. Following closely were the Nordic countries of Sweden (45.3 percent), Iceland (42.6 percent), Norway and Finland (around 42 percent). In Germany, just under a quarter of workers (23.4 percent) worked from home, and less than 15 percent of workers in Italy and Spain did the same. Eastern Europe had the lowest share of workers teleworking, with only around three percent of the working population in Romania and Bulgaria reporting working from home in 2023.

Factors Influencing Work from Home Rates

The prevalence of working from home within a population is influenced by various factors, including the degree of tertiarization and digitalization of the economy. These factors affect the share of jobs that can be carried out by teleworking.

Bottom Line

The trend of working from home has seen a significant increase in recent years, particularly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The rates vary across different countries in Europe, with factors such as the level of digitalization of the economy playing a key role. It's interesting to observe these patterns and consider how they might evolve in the future. What are your thoughts on this? Share this article with your friends and let's discuss.
