Brazil's Supreme Court Judge Blocks Starlink's Financial Accounts
In a recent development, Alexandre de Moraes, a Brazilian Supreme Court Judge, has blocked the financial accounts of Starlink Holdings, a company owned by Elon Musk. This action comes a day after Moraes threatened to suspend a social media platform, unless Musk appoints a new legal representative within 24 hours. Moraes, who has been referred to as "Brazil's Darth Vader" by Musk, has also issued a subpoena against the company.
Moraes' Actions Against Musk's Companies
Moraes views the companies as part of a "de facto economic group" under Musk's command. On August 18, he sanctioned the bank accounts of the social media platform to ensure the payment of fines imposed by the Brazilian justice for refusing to censor content.
Reports from G1 and Metropoles confirm that another Musk-owned company in Brazil, Starlink Holding, which is responsible for the sale of satellite internet services, also had its finances blocked. All Starlink managers in Brazil have received notifications and have been subpoenaed to answer for the values due to the Brazilian Justice by the social media network.
Musk's Response to Moraes' Actions
In response to these actions, Musk has called Moraes a dictator and made a bold statement saying "this picture of you in prison will be real. Mark my words." Earlier this month, Moraes ordered an investigation into Musk after the billionaire vowed to defy a court order. This is part of an ongoing probe into social media accounts allegedly spreading misinformation and 'hate' speech.
Moraes wrote, "The flagrant conduct of obstruction of Brazilian justice, incitement of crime, the public threat of disobedience of court orders and future lack of cooperation from the platform are facts that disrespect the sovereignty of Brazil."
Musk's Defiance Against Court Orders
While the social media platform initially agreed to comply, blocking certain popular accounts in Brazil, Musk later stated that they would not comply. He noted that "As a result, we will probably lose all revenue in Brazil and have to shut down our office there."
The following day, Musk stated that Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes had "brazenly and repeatedly betrayed the constitution and people of Brazil," and should "resign or be impeached." De Moraes responded by saying that as part of his decision to open an inquiry, "the social media platform shall refrain from disobeying any court order already issued, including performing any profile reactivation that has been blocked by this Supreme Court." He also stated that Musk would face a fine that equates to approximately $20,000 each time an account is reactivated on the platform.
Bottom Line
This escalating feud between Musk and Moraes is a clear example of the tension that can arise between tech companies and governments over issues of jurisdiction, censorship, and the rule of law. It raises important questions about the power dynamics between multinational corporations and national governments, and the implications for freedom of speech and information.
