Conservative Parties in Europe Should Brace for Increased Censorship, Warns Flemish MEP
An Interview with Gerolf Annemans by Thomas Brooke of RMXnews.com
Conservative Parties Should Prepare for Censorship
In a recent interview with Remix News, Gerolf Annemans, an MEP from the Vlaams Belang party and president of the European Identity and Democracy group, issued a warning that conservative parties across Europe should prepare for a wave of censorship. This censorship, he predicts, will be enacted by a liberal establishment that is growing increasingly desperate. Annemans made these comments during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Hungary.
Alternative Methods of Communication
Annemans believes that conservative parties should start looking for alternative ways to communicate with their followers, as he expects social media platforms to be increasingly censored. He suggests that parties should return to traditional methods of communication, such as door-to-door canvassing, to ensure their messages continue to reach the public.
Vlaams Belang's Success on Social Media
The Vlaams Belang party, a Flemish nationalist party advocating for Flanders' independence from Belgium, has seen significant success on social media platforms, particularly Facebook. However, Annemans warns that this success could lead to a backlash and increased censorship efforts from those who oppose their views.
The Threat of the Digital Services Act
Annemans also spoke about the European Union's Digital Services Act, a regulation designed to monitor content on digital platforms and remove content deemed "socially undesirable." He expressed concerns that the vague definitions of "harmful content" and "disinformation" could lead to overzealous censorship efforts by tech platforms.
Offline Censorship of Conservatives
Annemans also highlighted that censorship of conservative views is not limited to online platforms. He cited the example of the National Conservatism conference in Brussels, where an attempt by the local mayor to shut down the event was only overturned after judicial intervention.
The Future of Vlaams Belang
Despite facing censorship and opposition, the Vlaams Belang party continues to grow in popularity, particularly among young people. Annemans attributes this success to the party's willingness to adapt and rejuvenate its leadership.
Demographic Changes in Brussels
Annemans also spoke about the demographic changes occurring in Brussels, with a significant increase in the non-EU national population. He expressed concerns about the radicalization of the Muslim population and the impact this could have on the cultural image of the city.
