Illegal Voting Charge for Chinese National in Michigan
A Chinese national has been charged by Michigan officials for illegally voting in the 2024 US election. The incident occurred at an early voting site in Ann Arbor on Oct. 27.
Investigation Initiated by Alert Clerk
The investigation was sparked by a clerk who noticed something amiss with the voter, a Chinese student. The student was subsequently charged with one count of "unauthorized elector attempting to vote" and one count of perjury for "making a false affidavit for the purpose of securing voter registration."
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit issued a statement on Oct. 30, reminding that "only U.S. citizens can register and vote in our elections. It is illegal to lie on any registration forms or voting applications about one’s citizenship status. Doing so is a felony."
Non-Citizen Voting: A Rare Occurrence
Officials emphasized that non-citizen voting is "an extremely isolated and rare event." They pointed out that "investigations in multiple states and nationwide have found no evidence of large numbers of noncitizens registering to vote. Even less common is a noncitizen actually casting a ballot. When it does happen, we take it extremely seriously. Our elections are secure and Michigan’s state and local election officials carefully follow the law."
They also noted that voting records are public, so any attempts by noncitizens to vote fraudulently will be exposed and prosecuted.
The Case of the Chinese National
The Chinese national, a 19-year-old student, had registered to vote on Sunday. He used his student ID and other documentation to establish residency and signed a document attesting to being a US citizen. However, after casting his vote, the student contacted the city clerk's office in an attempt to retract the illegal vote. Unfortunately, his ballot had already been processed.
Michigan AG Dana Nessel has opened an investigation into the matter.
Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI) has urged Benson's office to announce a plan to "prevent similar election fraud in the next week" and "secure our elections against CCP interference," as reported by the Epoch Times. Moolenaar also suggested that "The University of Michigan should expel this student for violating our laws and our state’s leaders need to take serious action against the Chinese Communist Party’s attempts to influence our state."
Bottom Line
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the integrity of our electoral system. It underscores the need for vigilance in ensuring that only eligible citizens participate in the voting process. What are your thoughts on this matter?
