Lamborghini Urus SUV Recall: Potential Hood Malfunction at High Speeds

Lamborghini Initiates Recall of Urus SUV Due to Potential Hood Malfunction at High Speeds

Lamborghini has recently issued a safety recall report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), warning that over 2,000 of its luxury SUVs, each priced at $200,000, could potentially have their hoods fly open when driving at high speeds.

Details of the Safety Recall

The Part 573 Safety Recall Report issued by Lamborghini affects 2,133 Urus vehicles. This kind of recall is initiated when the manufacturer identifies a safety defect and reports it to the NHTSA. It is mandatory for manufacturers to submit these reports promptly after discovering the defects.

Lamborghini's Investigation and Findings

In August 2023, Lamborghini received two non-safety related warranty claims from Europe regarding misalignment between the carbon hood and the fender. This prompted the Volkswagen AG-owned manufacturer to launch an investigation with the supplier concerning hood vibration/noises, gaps, and loose hoods. Lamborghini's investigation revealed that "deformed rivet studs" around the "hood latch strikers" could create small gaps between the hood and front bumper at speeds exceeding 94 mph. This allows air to enter, which over time, could cause "stress that can cause the latch system to fail and separate the hood latch striker from the hood."

Implications for the Urus Model

What does this mean for the Urus, Lamborghini's top-selling model worldwide? The hoods of these vehicles could potentially fly open suddenly at high speeds, obstructing the driver's view.

Closing Thoughts

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in the design and manufacture of vehicles, particularly those capable of reaching high speeds. It also highlights the value of proactive responses from manufacturers when potential defects are identified. What are your thoughts on this issue?
