Newly Released FBI Records

On Tuesday, the FBI made public a fresh set of records related to its investigation into the Capitol Hill uprising that took place on Jan. 6, 2021. These records, which include 107 pages of new documents, have further complicated the understanding of the event. Among these documents is a string of heavily redacted emails with the subject line "Stand down. See below." The identities of the individuals involved in the email exchange remain undisclosed, with the exception of a supervisory intelligence analyst from the FBI's DC office. The date and time of these emails are also redacted, except for one sent at 5:46 p.m. on Jan. 5, 2021.

Investigation into a Group Travelling to Washington DC

The scant information available in the emails indicates that law enforcement was scrutinizing a group of people who journeyed to Washington DC on Jan. 5. One email from the thread stated that the only members of the group proceeding to DC were unarmed non-subjects who seemed to be solely involved in legal First Amendment protesting. In response, another individual expressed gratitude for the swift action taken that day. On Jan. 5, 2021, law enforcement did encounter some armed individuals, as highlighted by Jan. 6 defendant William Pope.

Arrests on Jan. 5

For example, the DC Metropolitan Police Department reportedly halted a "Hippies for Trump" bus on Jan. 5, arresting a protestor during the stop. Officers reported finding a pistol, a rifle, over 300 rounds of ammunition, and fireworks. Harlan Boen, a man from Colorado, was also reportedly arrested on Jan. 5 for possessing a pistol at Freedom Plaza.

Forewarning of Potential Violence

The set of FBI emails unveiled on Tuesday also contains discussions between members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) on Jan. 5, 2021, which hint at anticipated violence. One heavily redacted email from Jan. 4, 2021, reveals that the JTTF was treating the forthcoming Stop the Steal rally as a "usual" event. The FBI has refrained from commenting on its Jan. 6 investigation in response to emails from Headline USA.
