Understanding American Sentiments Towards Federal Agencies

The 2024 Election Season and Public Opinion

As the 2024 election season gathers momentum, the focus of elected officials is expected to be on the preferences of the voters. This is a period when American citizens express their varying sentiments towards different sectors of the government.

Insights from a Recent Opinion Poll

Pallavi Rao and Sam Parker from Visual Capitalist have analyzed the results of a recent opinion poll conducted by the Pew Research Center. The poll, which was conducted between March 13-19, asked 10,701 adults about their feelings, whether favorable or unfavorable, towards 16 different federal agencies.

Americans' Views on the Park Service and the IRS

The poll results showed that out of the 16 federal government agencies, 14 received more favorable responses than unfavorable ones. The Parks Service, Postal Service, and NASA were particularly popular, with approval ratings exceeding 70%. However, the Department of Education and the IRS were viewed less favorably. The IRS, in particular, had a majority (51%) of unfavorable responses.

Considerations and Caveats

There are certain factors to consider when interpreting this data. For one, tax collection is generally viewed as a less pleasant activity compared to maintaining parks. Also, the timing of the survey, which was conducted a month before the tax deadline, could have influenced the responses.

Recent Criticisms of the IRS

The IRS has faced criticism in recent years. According to a 2019 New York Times article, budget cuts over the past eight years have hindered the agency's ability to thoroughly scrutinize tax filings from wealthier and more sophisticated filers. Conversely, poorer Americans are experiencing increased audits on wage subsidies available to low-income workers. A report by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse indicated that this group of filers was audited five-and-a-half times more than the average American.
